DID YOU KNOW?

Plenty of fish, reptiles, amphibians, spiders, and insects lived during the Ice Age. These animals were an important source of food for some of the bigger, better-known animals.

WHERE DID THE ICE AGE ANIMALS GO?

When Earth started warming up around 20,000 years ago, the glaciers started to melt. The warmer weather allowed more trees and larger plants to grow in new areas. For large Ice Age animals that needed grasses and flowers to eat, there was less food, because the larger plants crowded out the smaller food plants.

MOVIE FACT CHECK

Scrat, the saber-toothed squirrel from the Ice Age movies, started out as an imaginary animal. In 2005, paleontologists were surprised when they found the skull of a real saber-toothed mammal that would have looked like a squirrel and been about the same size. They had never seen an animal like that before. However, the real saber-toothed squirrel lived during the time of dinosaurs, more than 100 million years ago. There were none left by the time of the ice ages.
