On August 3, Endurance was ready to set sail. The next day, World War I began in Europe, and England went to war with Germany.

Shackleton called his men together and they took a vote. The South Pole trip could wait if England needed them. Shackleton wrote to the king to volunteer his men and his ship to help in the war. They received a telegram that said, “Proceed.” England would fight on without them.

Chapter 6

Trapped in the Ice!

The journey from England to the Antarctic took several months. Endurance sailed southwest across the Equator toward South America. It then turned toward the southern tip of the continent. From there, the ship would make the last leg of its journey to Antarctica.

The ship stopped in several places along the way to take on supplies and send mail, which traveled on ships heading back to England. One of Endurance ’s final stops was at Buenos Aires, Argentina. When the vessel left there, its crew was bigger by one—but Shackleton didn’t know it.

Perce Blackboro had snuck aboard the ship as a stowaway. He was not found for several days. The Boss was very upset, but there was nothing he could do, so Blackboro was given a job helping the ship’s cook.
