The third family, the Mengsuns, still resisted Duke Ding’s order to destroy their castle. The duke led an army against it, but he could not defeat the Mengsuns’ army. He returned to Qufu in defeat.

Recording the History of Lu

Information about the rebellion in Lu during Confucius’s life comes mostly from two books. One is the Spring and Autumn Annals, which Lu officials used to record important yearly political events. It’s considered China’s first history book. This record was begun in 722 BCE and kept for almost 250 years. The name suggests the passing of one year, even though only two of the four seasons are named. The era in Chinese history that began around 770 BCE and ended around 476 BCE is called the Spring and Autumn Period, named after this important book. The entries in the annals, which are the historical records for each year, are often short. They might list simply one month and an event such as a religious ceremony or a natural disaster.
