Chapter 12
Things Just Got Complicated
* * *
âItâs become complicated, Sam.â Edward dragged his hand through his hair and slumped his shoulders in defeat. Sam was on his back as he lifted weights with heavy puffs of air and groaned as he lowered the bar to its stand.
âTalk to me,â he said, sitting up and taking his flask.
âIâve already blown the budget â which was stupid and unrealistic by the way â and I canât lie to Catherine. Sheâs also got more baggage than I think I can deal with.â
Sam snorted.
âYou blew the budget? Youâre only four days in.â
Edward nodded towards a carefully wrapped package in the corner of the room. Sam rolled his eyes.
âI see,â he said before taking a swig.
âI met with her exâââ
A spray of water drenched Edward as Sam spat out his drink.
âYou â did â what?â he said dramatically as Edward scrunched his face and wiped his eyes. âI told you not to get involved. But you canât help yourself, can you? Eddie, you are a lost cause.â
Edward shrugged.
âI wanted to punch his lights out,â he said, his fist clenching automatically at the memory. âHeâs a lousy, good-for-nothing, low-life.â
âWhy did you meet him?â
âSam, heâs been following her. Sheâs afraid of him and I wanted toâââ
âPut the fear of God in him?â Sam cocked a brow at him and gave Edward a wry smile.
âSomething like that.â
âSo, what happened?â
Edward recounted his conversation with Calvin as Sam did bicep curls on the bench. He nodded along in thought and grunted as Edward finished.
âThatâs it now. Right? Youâre going to leave her alone.â
Edward scoffed and got to his feet. His private gym had already been cluttered with Samâs belongings. Socks littered the floor, empty bottles sat like trophies beside the equipment and a pile of workout clothes sat wrinkled on his exercise bike.
âLook, about this deal,â he began frankly. Sam wagged a finger at him.
âWe shook on it. A gentlemanâs agreement. Donât try to weasel your way out of this one,â he said, his eyes gleaming. Edward sighed.
âFine, keep the penthouse. Iâll buy a new one. But for goodness sake, get a maid, will you?â
âGreat minds have messy houses,â Sam said wisely. Edward scratched the back of his neck. The sight of all the clutter in his penthouse suite made him anxious.
âThe deal is off, but I donât want her to know who I am.â He gave Sam a hard look. âSo, keep your mouth shut.â
Sam gave a salute and looked at him with amusement.
âYouâre still worried sheâll only love you for money? This is Anthonyâs cousin weâre talking about.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â Edward strode over to the window and rested his hands on his hips.
âEddie, sheâs a world-class opera singer. Do you really think she cares about money?â
Edward turned away from the window and looked at Sam in thought, but he didnât really see him. Instead, his mind played out memories of his date with Catherine. After he told her that his work was secret, she didnât press the matter.
