Simone had entered the 2016 Olympic qualification process with fourteen world championship medals—more than any other woman in US gymnastics history. Being at the Olympic Games was a dream come true. Simone and her teammates nicknamed themselves the “Final Five” to honor Coach Martha, who planned to retire after the Games. Team USA dominated the qualifying round, with Simone, Aly, and Gabby finishing first, second, and third overall. Two days later, they won a team gold medal. Then came the all-around competition. Simone finished the vault in first place overall, but found herself behind Russian gymnast Aliya Mustafina after the uneven bars, with two events to go. Simone was flawless on the beam, and her perfectly executed double-twisting double tuck dismount had the distinction of being the most difficult in the world. It earned her a 15.433 score that helped her retake the lead.

The floor event had always been Simone’s best, and that day was no exception. As the familiar samba music of her routine filled the air, she flipped, tumbled, and somersaulted her way to a 15.933—the highest score of the competition. She’d earned an Olympic gold medal in the all-around!

Simone finished her first Olympic Games with gold medals in the all-around, vault, and floor; a team gold medal; and a bronze on the balance beam, setting an American record for the most gold medals a female gymnast has ever won in one Olympics. To celebrate, the American Olympians selected Simone to represent Team USA as the flag bearer in the closing ceremonies for Rio 2016.
