General Characteristics for Five- to Seven-Year-Olds

• They are eager to learn, are easily fatigued, and have short periods of interest.

• They are self-assertive, boastful, less cooperative, and more competitive.

• They need rest periods. Good quiet activities would be reading books together or doing simple art projects.

• Their large muscles are well developed. Activities involving small muscles will be difficult (working on models with small pieces).

• They may tend to be accident-prone.

• They like organized games and are very concerned about following rules.

• They can be very competitive.

• They are very imaginative and involved in fantasy playing.

• They are self-assertive, aggressive, less cooperative at age seven than at age five, and boastful, and they want to be first.

• They learn best through active participation.

• They are very sensitive to praise and recognition and their feelings are easily hurt.

• They are inconsistent in level of maturity evidenced.

• They regress when tired and are often less mature at home than with outsiders.
