ONCE MADDUX LEFT the office, Bearden glanced up to make sure the man he’d just spent the past quarter hour grilling was looking elsewhere. Bearden dialed the number of Malcolm Pointdexter. Less than a minute later, he was standing in front of Bearden.

“What is it, sir?” Poindexter asked.

“Do you know Ed Maddux?”

He nodded but remained silent.

“I’m going to give you a new assignment,” Bearden said. “I want you to work on a surveillance case for me. For the next couple of days, keep an eye on Maddux, who’s working on catching the KGB agent responsible for the disappearance of a couple of our people from the Belgrade station as well as Pritchett. Let me know immediately if you see him conducting any suspicious activity. Is that clear?”

“Yes, sir,” Poindexter said. “I won’t let you down.”

Bearden was getting tired of hearing that line. He knew that inevitably someone would let him down. And if it was Maddux, Bearden would make sure that the civilian agent would regret it for the rest of his life.
