CHAPTER 12

Replacing the teacup on its saucer, Max put aside the invoice he’d received from the farrier. A silver platter piled with mail waited for his attention. Yet, he wanted nothing more than to ride Queenie over to Hopewood Farm and see Caroline. It upset him that she’d not been to see him in the two weeks since that awful night. Yet, he had not been to visit her either. For reasons he didn’t understand something in her manner confused him, and he stopped himself from calling on her when it was all he wanted to do.

Abruptly he stood, wincing at the movement, as his wound twitched, reminding him of the ache. Carefully, he stepped to the window in frustration. How could he approach Caroline with the notion of revealing his feelings for her, of his desire and wish for them to be married? She had given him no incentive to imagine she felt anything for him but a mild friendship, perhaps gratefulness for rescuing her from Dolan’s hideous plans.

Rain pitted against the glass, grey clouds hung low and heavy. A strong wind flattened the last of the flowers and tossed the highest tree branches. The mid-September day was as miserable as he felt.

Annoyed at everything and nothing, he sat back to his desk and shifted through the pile of mail without care until he saw a letter in his aunt’s hand. Quickly, he opened it with the letter knife.
