I spent half the night cradling Aria, determined to chase her demons away before morning.

Now, I’m standing outside the diner we met at a few months back. I have zero appetite, but E said he had some intel for me that’s needed before the gala tomorrow. After last night, I didn’t feel comfortable having Aria tag along, so I decided to do this solo. I left her buried in a mountain of blankets in my bed and a dozen doughnuts on the kitchen counter. I’m certain that will calm whatever wrath she will have, knowing I left her alone this morning. Then her anger will pick back up when she finds out the reason why I left her alone.

I watch as Ethan turns the corner, his confident stride bringing him closer to me. I nod and lead him into an adjacent alley. As he rounds the corner, I collide with him. His shirt entangles with my clenched fists, and I forcefully press him against the brick wall. In protest, he lets out a low, guttural grunt.

“If you ever make her fucking cry again, I will gouge your fucking eyeballs out, E.”

“I just wanted to t-talk!” he stammers. “I owed her that at least”

“How long has she had those attacks?” I loosen my grip on him, allowing him to straighten his shirt back out.

“What?”

“The fucking panic attacks, you idiot,” I growl, not in the mood for him playing fucking dumb today.

“Since her dad started drinking too much. Fucking Jimmy supplied her dad with so much alcohol it ate his liver. We were fucking kids.”

I flinch at my dad’s name before quickly shaking it off. He doesn’t know that Jimmy is my father. “How long has she cut herself?”

“I found scars on the back of her legs when we were teenagers.” He pauses for a moment. “I got her to stop back then, not quite sure how. How was I supposed to know she ever started again?”

“She started again because of you and whatever you did to her back then.” The thought of any man making her feel less than fills me with a rage I don’t think I could cool down easily.

“Don’t you fucking do that,” Ethan seethes—his anger mirroring mine. Good, I want him just as pissed as I am. I’ve worked alongside Aria for two years and never realized that she held such dark demons, or that this felt like the only way to release them. I’m not an expert on mental illness shit, but I hate that she thought hurting herself was her only option to achieve peace.

“Do what?” My eyes glare at him up and down, sizing him up.

“Aria is the most important person to me, so don’t try to make me feel any guiltier than I already do,” Ethan says, raking his hand through his hair.

I see red and wrap my fist around Ethan’s throat, slamming him, yet again, back into the brick wall. My grip tightens as I watch his eyes panic. That’s my favorite part about strangling someone—the fear in their eyes.
