Chapter fifteen

Zach

“Son of a bitch!” Colt exclaimed as Layla hung up on him. “Someone go feed the fucking wolves!”

“I’ll go,” Drew said. I watched him dart out of the room like his ass was on fire. He didn’t care much for being part of the interrogations. Drew would always do what he needed to do to get shit done, but if he didn’t have to get bloody, he’d rather not. He’d be back, though. None of us missed it when Layla implied we wouldn’t want her after she got done with Benjamin, as if there was any aspect of her that we wouldn’t want. So, he would be back to make sure he was here when she finally came out of that room to make sure she understood we loved and supported her no matter what. We’ve all done bad things. Why would we ever hold hers against her? Hell, she was the fucking queen, and a true queen leads from the front. My little slasher would never be the woman who ran her kingdom by sitting on her throne.

I looked over at Tyler. He sat there looking offended as he watched the interrogation, his eyes darting to his laptop every twenty seconds, trying not to pout. It seemed Layla also had a lesson for him—don’t try to override her decisions.

“Dude, you’ve got to stop pouting,” I said. “That door isn’t opening until she is done in there. Let it go. You know she has always been able to outhack you anyway.”

He shifted his glare to me.

“She cheated.”

“She outmaneuvered you, bro, accept it.”

“I’ve been running diagnostics on the entire system. When Layla found the time, I don’t know, but she put back doors and traps throughout the system without tripping any of my alarms. I would never have found them if I didn’t know what to look for.” He was impressed, if not a little put out, that she got all that by him. Tyler prides himself on being the best, but he’s forgotten that Layla’s always been the best in the six years she’s been gone.

“She’s the best at what she does. If she weren’t, you would have found her years ago.” I watched Layla turn back to Benjamin, tossing a larger knife around in her hand. She continued her story about what she had done to that piece of shit, John. She should have been able to trust him with her fucking life and the things that scumbag did to her, how he hurt her. He’s lucky that he is shark shit right now because I would have happily tortured him for years. I watched as she began to cut Benjamin as she told her story, mimicking the cuts she had given John.

“I believe I had a little to do with her staying hidden all these years,” Sean said from behind me. This fucking guy. He was draped over the desk chair, watching the interrogation. If you didn’t look too closely, he almost looked bored. He was good
