On Sunday night, Grandma blew up. I have never seen her so angry. She stormed out of her room, shouting, “Who took my photo album? Luke! Did you take it from my shelf?” Grandma’s fury shocked us.

“Where is it?” bellowed Grandma, her fists clenched. Grandma’s treasured photo album was missing. That photo album had family photos and photos of Grandma and Grandpa, when Grandpa was still around. It also contained the black and white photos of Grandpa and Grandma when they were young. Over the last three months, Grandma would take out the album and look at the pictures again and again.

Grandma loved to show me the photos and tell me about the time when the photos were taken. It was like a guided tour of our family’s past. Nowadays, it seemed like the distant past was more real to Grandma than what happened last week or yesterday.

“Where is it?” Grandma hollered.

“It’s there, Mother,” Dad replied calmly.

I walked across the hall and picked up the photo album from the floor beside Grandma’s rocking chair. As I handed the album to Grandma, I noticed her hands shaking in anger.

Tshuppah! I felt a stinging sensation sizzling on my face and I heard a buzzing, ringing sound in my ear. Grandma’s slap hurt my cheek terribly but the pain in my heart was worse. That was the first time that Grandma had hit me.
