CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Sure, I'm free. Where do you want to meet?
Kelly had read Bradley's reply half a dozen times, trying to gauge his tone. Was he excited to meet her? Or was he indifferent? If she read it enough times, would she be able to see the murderous intent behind the words?
Most importantly -- did he know that Kimberly had gone missing? Her surname wasnât listed on Heartlinks, and unless he paid close attention to the news, he might not have seen her photo appear. If he did know that Kimberly had been murdered -- if he was behind her disappearance -- then he might have decided to meet solely to find out who was on his trail. If that was the case, then Kelly would have to watch her back.
They agreed to meet at a small coffee shop on the outskirts of Greenfield, just a few miles from the high school. Kelly drove slowly, taking her time, trying to calm her nerves. She had a plan -- she would try to get as much information out of him as possible. If he was the killer, she needed to know his motives, his methods, his next move.
The coffee shop was quaint and quiet, with a few scattered patrons huddled over their laptops or books. Soft jazz music played over speakers in the ceilings, and the place was dotted with green -- potted plants in every corner, and a few hanging near the windows, sunlight filtering through their tendrils.
Kelly spotted Bradley right away, sitting alone at a small table in the back corner. He wore a Greenfield High School track jacket, embroidered with the word "Coach" on the lapel, as if he had just come from practice. In person, he had a boyish face; if Kelly didn't know he was twenty-six, she might have suspected that he was younger, closer to college-age. A half-empty cup of coffee sat on the table in front of him.
Kelly took a deep breath. Her thumb brushed the hilt of her hunting knife, tucked into her side holster where she always kept it -- out of sight. She didn't want to make a scene, but if she needed to draw it, she would.
However, she was confident that this meet-up wouldn't go that way. Even if Bradley was the killer, he wouldn't attack her here, not in front of half a dozen witnesses. Not in broad daylight.
Still, touching the knife comforted her. It was a reminder that she wasn't helpless, no matter how this went.
Kelly took a deep breath and approached the back table. As she drew close, Bradley looked up from his cell phone, a bemused frown crossing his face.
Kelly pulled out the chair opposite his and sat down, folding her hands on the table. She met his gaze squarely, and he stared at her as if he couldn't believe her audacity.
"I'm sorry," he said slowly. "But, um. I'm actually meeting someone here. And I don't think that I know you, so if you don't mind...."
"Actually," Kelly interrupted smoothly, "I think you do know me.
