It took barely a second for Archibald to pick the lock of the house on stilts where Gabrielle lived.

He had the impression of entering a sanctuary and the emotion of it gripped him suddenly, as if an animal had leapt at his throat. It was in this houseboat that he had woken up thirty-three years earlier, at Valentine’s side, on that fateful morning in December that had catapulted them both into a nightmare.

He carefully made his way inside. The scent of incense hung in the air. The house was empty, but full of memories. He immediately recognised the white wooden furniture that they had repainted together, the little wardrobe bought for a song at the flea market in Carmel, the free-standing mirror found in a second-hand store in Monterey …

A gentle breeze wafted in through the still-open door, rustling the flimsy curtains through which the light filtered. When he went into the kitchen memories of the past rose painfully to the surface: romantic dinners for the two of them, him making his special pasta with pesto, Valentine’s favourite dish, wine glasses clinking together, laughter, mouths forever seeking one another.

To blot out the scenes from the past, he turned on the tap and splashed his face with cold water. Two days earlier, the cancer gnawing at his pancreas had left him so weakened that he couldn’t make the slightest effort. Today, he felt surprisingly better. Taken at high dose, the painkillers were having their desired effect, helping him contain his illness and offering him relief, which might allow him to talk to Gabrielle for the last time.

The last time that would also be the first.
