Paris, France

The door slammed shut and shook the room. Paul Hart faced forward, not wanting to look his raging boss in the face. Palmer stalked around the desk and thumped into his oversized chair. Hart knew he’d been summoned to the principal’s office.

“Want to explain to me again what the fuck you were thinking?” Palmer started; his cheeks were unmistakably red, even obscured behind his thick beard. “In case you didn’t notice, there was a terror attack in central Paris today! We had resources diverted to cover you. Maybe they could have been better deployed, ever think of that? Or are you too selfish to care?”

The room fell silent after Palmer let out a sigh, as if the man realized he’d been too harsh on his inexperienced agent.

Hart, however, spoke up. “We don’t have time to complain about feelings getting hurt. I didn’t take no for an answer and got results. Now we have intel and a source who can be helpful. I suggest we prioritize what information she has given us and stop this madness. Once we get Clara back, then you can chew me out.”

Palmer grunted. “You sure have some balls on you, I’ll tell you that. Grew up pretty damn quickly.”

Hart threw up his hands. “Circumstances dictated.” He didn’t feel sorry for what he’d done. They needed results. He’d deal with the consequences of his throwing a teammate under the bus later.

Hart also doubted three American agents could have prevented the Seine attack, and his boss’s anger was out of frustration than anything else.

“Do we know anything about the target?” Hart asked, not willing to connect the attack to their current situation, but his sinking gut told him otherwise.

“It hasn’t been long enough for a proper investigation. The preliminary report we’re getting from our French friends is a political party rented out a riverboat. The party leader is a hard-liner on a crusade against Iran. Lobbied support all around Europe for harsh economic sanctions.”

“Iran would never be brazened enough to attack a country outright. Using a proxy only makes sense if we’re talking Hezbollah and Israel.”

“You’re a quick study, aren’t you.” Palmer stood and headed towards the door. Hart followed suit, momentarily relieved his chewing-out wasn’t worse. But, before opening the door, Palmer put his hand on Hart’s shoulder.

“Don’t forget, I am on your side. I want to stop all this and then get Clara back home just as much as you do. But we’re a team—you mess with one of my men again, and I’ll send you back to the States.” The men made eye contact and held it while Hart decided on his response. There was no point in debating their purposes; their energy needed to be poured into sourcing every lead from Diego’s pickpocketed wallet.

Hart motioned at the door. “Let’s get to work.”

The men took off towards the conference room where the team was gathered.

…

The room was a beehive of activity. Every computer station was taken up by an analyst, shouting bits of information back into the crowded audience.
