âI knew right away that my dad liked you,â Lily said from the backseat as she watched me through the rearview mirror.
âIs that right? Why do you think that?â I smiled back through the mirror at her.
âIâve never seen him that worked up over a girl before! I overheard him telling grandma about you the morning after you met,â she exclaimed.
âOh, yeah? Did he tell her I wasnât very nice to him that night?â
âHe told her that you were gorgeous but had a mouth on you. I donât know what that means though, everyone has a mouth,â she giggled. âBut then he said he didnât want to drag you into our drama, because you had enough of your own.â
He would be right about that. New divorce, all the shit with Sean, and I was a sassy little bitch over tequila. Yep, I definitely had enough of my own. But I furrowed my brow as I asked her, âWhat drama do you guys have?â
A serious look crossed her face and she glanced away from me to look out the window. âJust that he has me.â
She looked so sad and again I wondered about the relationship she had with Henry, if he was vocal about when he was upset with her. Not to say you couldnât be upset around your kid, but Lily acted as if Henryâs discontent was directly caused by her.
I pulled into the driveway and parked the car before I turned around to look at her. âHey, Lily? Youâre not the cause of any drama, okay?â
She took off her seatbelt and replaced her serious expression with a smile that lit up her face. âYouâre really nice, Daphne. Iâm really happy you and my dad are together.â
Turning back toward the house, I grinned and said, âThank you. I am too.â
Henry's home was beautiful. It was more modern than I had thought it would be, sitting two stories high with an oversized three-car garage with a deck over it. When I had thought about his house before, Iâd always imagined it as more cabin style, homey and comfortable. But this looked like a newer build for the neighborhood.
As Lily and I got out of the car, a woman who I assumed to be Maggie appeared on the doorstep. She looked like she might be in her mid-fifties, with sandy blonde hair and warm honey-colored eyes. Lily ran up and hugged her before turning to motion for me to follow, and I smiled sheepishly at Henry's mother as I approached.
âHi there, I'm Daphne. It's nice to meet you,â I introduced myself and held out my hand.
She shook it and replied, âIt's very nice to meet you, Daphne. Again, I wish it had been under different circumstances. Henry is going to be quite surprised when he gets home.â
I laughed nervously. âOh, I don't think I should be here when he gets home. I think that might be a conversation best kept between ourselves. I wouldn't want Lily to overhear anything.â
âI already know he didn't want to tell you about me yet.
