THIRTY-ONE

Aoife dropped Amy at preschool and drove to work. She was pulling into the car park when Orla phoned.

‘I got your message. I’ve no idea why Louisa decided to drop the investigation. As far as we know, the libel case is still going ahead.’

‘Have you spoken to Louisa since the hit-and-run?’

‘No. One of the senior partners is phoning her this week, or so his secretary tells me. He decided to leave it a few days until Edward is showing signs of improving. I think mainly he wants to find out how soon Edward will be able to take phone calls. In any case, I can’t contact her before he does. It wouldn’t go down well if Louisa mentioned I’d been in touch.’

Aoife generally drove to the canal to eat her lunch. She was about to leave when Cathy’s door opened.

‘Aoife, could you have a look at this before you go?’ She handed Aoife the previous day’s reconciliation figures. ‘I can’t make it balance. Do you think you might have written down an incorrect number?’

‘Let me check my records.’

Twenty minutes later, Aoife handed the form back to Cathy. ‘I’ve checked it against the system and the manual forms. It all adds up.’

‘Okay, thanks. I must be doing something stupid. Don’t worry about it.’

As usual, Cathy left at 4 p.m. As she locked up her office, Aoife decided this time she would not take on any extra work. She would say she had to leave work at 5:15 at the very latest and she was not doing any more accountancy work. If necessary, she would tell Cathy she had overheard Tony complaining that she made mistakes and she felt it was unreasonable to expect her to do a job for which she was untrained and inexperienced. But Cathy walked past her box without a word.

‘See you next week, Cathy.’

‘Yes.’ Cathy held her gaze for a moment. It wasn’t exactly a glare, but it was far from friendly. ‘Bye.’

That was odd. She’d seemed perfectly friendly earlier. Aoife shrugged. Tony had probably said Cathy would have to do her own work in future. Hopefully she wasn’t going to hold that against Aoife for long. One person not talking to her was quite enough.
