Chapter 11

Fern

The classroom was going to be Fern’s sanctuary; she already knew it. This was where she would teach students how to paint and share everything she’d learned. It was a gift to bring emotion to life with color and light, and she wanted to impart that gift to others.

Helping others find a way to escape, a way to communicate without words, excited Fern. If she could give that to others, she would feel fulfilled.

The cubbies would soon be installed, and she’d overheard something about Elliot wanting to add a projector and a screen. It was a wonderful idea—she could teach that much easier if she could work with slides. She was impressed with how Elliot considered his clients and offered extra input.

He was a good man. Even when her body didn’t always agree.

After Elliot had gone, she’d taken a chance and left the studio closed a short while longer. Instead, she’d driven to the hardware store, where she’d bought black paint. Now, after the close of the business day, she painted the walls black as music blared into her ears. She wasn’t going back to the apartment just yet. She wanted to keep cleaning, but after this morning, she needed a distraction.

Fern became lost in her own world. She sang along to the song blasting on the speakers, painting the walls in broad strokes. The act of painting felt so soothing and therapeutic.

“You’re painting the walls black?” Veronica’s voice sounded right behind her.

Fern jumped and spun around. When she saw it was Veronica, she turned down the music.

“I didn’t hear you come in,” she said.

“With the music on, I don’t blame you,” Veronica said with a smile.

Fern had locked the doors, and with the business day over, she hadn’t needed to worry about customers. Veronica had a key, which was the only reason she’d been able to sneak up on Fern.

“Sorry,” Fern said.

“Not at all.” Veronica shook her head and glanced around the room. “Interesting choice of color.”

“Oh, yeah. I know it’s a little unorthodox, but look.” She turned to the paintings that leaned against the far wall, which she hadn’t put up yet. She held one up against the wall she’d been working on, careful not to touch the wet paint. “What do you think?”

Veronica studied the picture. “I see what you’re doing. It really makes the colors pop.”

“That’s what I want,” Fern admitted. “I want the students to see that with a little extra work, they can drive a whole new feeling home that wasn’t there before. Art isn’t only in the art itself but in its presentation.”

“That’s very good,” Veronica said, nodding.

“A monochromatic color scheme does a lot for the color in the artwork,” Fern continued. “And it looks so sophisticated. It allows us to work on a whole new level of customers, too. If you design your website the same way, then it can really come together, and you could draw people from much farther and wider than you are now.”

Veronica blushed. “I don’t have a website.
