Chapter Eleven

Hannah

“Okay, I know someone had to have spilled the beans,” I offer up, sitting next to Brock in the truck. “Are you going to tell me who?” We pull into the parking lot of the Line & Dine “live band, line dancing, and great BBQ” for our first official date.

Brock had showed up on my doorstep this morning with freshly picked flowers telling me how sorry he was. He said, “I know that ‘SORRY’ is not enough, and I want you to feel how much I care about you. I need to make things better for you and for me. The last three days have been so hard to focus since I have not been able to talk to you. Can I take you out on a real date tonight, just the two of us.”

I didn’t honestly hold anything against him as I realize the angst that having a child hurt must have caused him. The truth is, I missed him so much in the last few days since I saw him, I am more than willing to get on with whatever comes next for us. Though, to be protective of my heart, we did agree on communication over knee-jerk reactions in the future.

“A man never gives away a friend trying to help. I didn’t know where you might like to go during your off time, but I hear dancing is a definite hobby of yours,” he says as he pulls in and puts the vehicle in park. “I heard this place was out here. Wow—it looks like a fun night ahead of us.”

I glance out the windshield and try to see the Line & Dine through the lens of a man who has lived in bigger cities. The place is nestled amidst rolling fields and an abundance of rustic charm. The big, huge neon sign above the establishment is in stark contrast to the weathered board sideboards and rough-looking sidewalk leading inside.

“You know, I understand it might not be fancy, and it has weathered a lot of time out here—but I just love this old place. The Line & Dine is a newer place, but the building has been here forever, it was an old warehouse. The dance floor holds so many memories for me and Paisley, along with other friends. I don’t think I would ever feel better in a big fancy place than I do here,” I tell him.

“I get that,” he says. “It does bring back so many memories. I remember when they would shut this down for our high school senior parties and even prom one year,” Brock relays as we jump from the truck to head inside.

“I’m so happy to be here with you tonight,” Brock says as he laces his fingers with mine. “I’m not blowing this second chance, I promise. I do have to admit something, though.”

I turn to him as my heart hiccups. I am so happy tonight and don’t need anything getting in the way.

“What? Please tell me it is not going to ruin this amazing night,” I tell him.
