One of the most famous rooms in the White House is called the Lincoln Bedroom, even though he never slept there. He used it as an office when he was president. Today, only close friends or important guests are invited to sleep in the Lincoln Bedroom. It’s considered a huge treat. But some people think that a nice hotel would be more comfortable. People say the Lincoln Bed is lumpy!

Altogether, there are 132 rooms in the White House. There are thirty-five bathrooms now, but there weren’t always so many. In fact, the first presidents had to go outside to an outhouse to use the toilet! Thomas Jefferson installed two toilets indoors, but not everyone could use them. The servants had to use the outhouse.

President Franklin Pierce added the first bathtub to the White House in 1853. He had hot water brought into the house, too. But a normal size tub wasn’t big enough for William Taft, who was president from 1909 to 1913. He weighed more than three hundred pounds! Taft had to have a giant tub made especially for him.
