Chapter Twelve
Evie looked up at the sound of a knock on the office door. Sheâd been working back here this morning because Russ had asked her to help with the roster and with scheduling classes. She didnât mind, it was easy work. Sheâd done it all for years for Tom back in the early days. Still, it felt strange to be sitting back here with the door closed when sheâd been used to sitting out at the front desk. She wanted to believe that Russ genuinely needed her help with the admin work, but she couldnât help wondering if Adam had asked him to keep her back here.
âCome in,â she called when the knock came again.
The door opened, and Ria stood there smiling at her. âHi, how are you doing today?â
âIâm doing fine, thanks. How are you?â
Ria came in and closed the door behind her. âIâm great. I spent the morning on the phone with the children and now Iâm ready for some lunch. I came to see if youâd like to join me?â
Evie pursed her lips. Sheâd love to go to the bakery. Sheâd come to enjoy having lunch there with the woman sheâd come to think of as her new friend. But she was feeling less sure of herself lately. Adam was watching her much more closely. And she didnât know but she guessed that Cal, Manny, and Ryan were coming into the gym separately so that at least one of them was there most of the time.
âItâs okay if youâre too busy,â said Ria with a smile.
âNo, itâs not that. Iâd love to go with you. Itâs justâ¦â
âOh!â Ria nodded. âIâm sorry. I should have realized. If you like, I can go and get us something and bring it back here.â
Evie got to her feet. âYou know what? Iâm tired of being cooped up back here. I could use some fresh air and weâll get that on the walk over there. And itâd be nice to have a change of scenery.â She looked around with a smile. âThese four walls might be as sick of me as I am of them.â
Ria arched one perfectly groomed brow. âI understand your feeling that way, but do you think we should check in with Russ first?â
Evie nodded and pulled her phone out of her purse. âYes, weâll talk to him before we go, and ⦠Iâm going to check in with Adam too.â She rolled her eyes. âThis feels strange. Part of me wants to rebel against it but that poor man is doing so much to keep me safe. I owe it to him to check in with him before I go gallivanting around town.â
Ria chuckled. âI understand. I understand both sides. I donât think either of us is comfortable with the idea that we need to get a manâs permission before we go anywhere. But at the same time, youâre not asking permission.â
Evie shook her head rapidly. âOh, my goodness, no! Itâs not that. Itâs more out of respect for him and deference to his knowledge and experience.
