Chapter Twenty

Speakers’ Corner, Hyde Park

Evelyn looked at the silver and pearl watch on her wrist and turned to look around. She was at the appointed meeting place in the northeast corner of the park, but there was no sign of Marrow. She sighed and walked a few feet before stopping. She would wait until quarter past, but if there were still no sign of him, she would leave. Standing around in the park indefinitely was not something that appealed to her, especially after her conversation with Bill last evening. The less attention she drew to herself, no matter where she was, the better at this point.

Evelyn turned and walked slowly to the other side of the area where people gathered to listen to politicians, artists, zealots, and everyone in between. Today it was empty and silent, but the path that ran past it was not. Despite there being a war, and it being the middle of the work week, several people were in the park. If Vladimir Lyakhov was correct, any one of them could be watching her, waiting to report back to Hans Voss. Or one of them could be a Soviet spy sent to keep an eye on her. Neither possibility was welcome to her, and a chill went down her spine. Of all the places that she should feel at ease and comfortable, London should be at the top of the list. Instead, she’d learned that it was no better than Paris, or Zurich, or Brussels. It seemed there was nowhere now that she could relax and be confident that she was among allies. The enemy, it seemed, had infiltrated them all.

A frown settled on her face and she pressed her lips together. And yet they were having no luck in reciprocating, either in the Soviet Union or in occupied France. Bill had told her last night that he was still trying to discover which agents were still at liberty in France. The only one that he knew for certain was still free and undetected by the Nazis was the one who had helped her escape Bordeaux two months before. Leon had contacted him a few days ago. He was safe.

For now.

When Bill told her, Evelyn had been surprised. While she hadn’t said as much to him, she hadn’t expected Leon to have escaped capture. Eisenjager had been in Bordeaux, and had tried to kill her as they were leaving. It had seemed inevitable that he would have reported Leon’s involvement to the Gestapo. And yet, it appeared that he had not. Now why would that be?

She had puzzled over that for most of the night as she tossed and turned in her bed in Brook Street. The family house, which had become something of a haven for her in the past year, suddenly didn’t seem as safe and secure as it had in the past. Every small noise had made her start in the night, giving her ample opportunity to think about why Leon was still free.
