“Cheesy” Beginnings

Lucy Lawless turned 22 on March 29, 1990.

The woman known the world over as Xena, Warrior Princess, got her first big break acting in a “really bad, cheesy commercial” when she was 22.

“I did this sort of embarrassing commercial for travel,” Lucy Lawless once recalled. “I wore a bathing suit, and I am not a bathing suit girl. … But they seemed to like me and I got another one after that.”

Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Lawless got married at 20 and won the Mrs. New Zealand competition at 21. She was eager to start an acting career but found success only in the advertising circuit. However, the commercials finally paved the way for her first television acting job.

At the end of her 22nd year, Lawless won a role on the comedy sketch show Funny Business, where she showed off the natural comic timing that would later add charm to her best-known character, the Warrior Princess.

Lawless worked several other jobs until landing the title-character role in Xena in 1995, a show that became a phenomenal success around the globe and set records in syndication.
