CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

O nce the uncomfortable conversation about their feelings for their respective gentlemen was over, Amelia felt more at ease in Lady Sarah’s presence. As if she had been bolstered with the mention of Lord Romcour, Lady Sarah wouldn’t stop talking about him. She went on and on about how much she had longed to tell Amelia about her feelings, but that she had been too uncertain about what it all meant.

If there was one thing Amelia could agree with, it was that. Her own feelings had been muddled at first, laced with confusion since she’d never felt anything like it before. But that kiss she shared with Lord Carlefair in the gardens at the last ball brought her all the clarity that she needed.

I’m falling for him. Hard and fast.

The realization kept her silent throughout the rest of her conversation and when Lady Sarah had been called away by the Duchess, Amelia felt relief course through her. It wasn’t that she didn’t like being in Lady Sarah’s presence. She only wanted more time alone to sort through what she needed to do.

She stood and left the drawing room, not thinking about where she was headed next. The Manor was so large that she felt she could spend all day simply walking as she allowed her mind to wander from one thing to the next. Amelia knew she had to do something about her situation. And she had to do it soon.

She sighed, finding herself walking toward the gardens again. She’d been here already since the morning but she didn’t turn back. The bright sun should do her some good. When she used to be with Ambrose, she would spend a lot of time outdoors whenever she wasn’t practicing the ways of society. Though she’d never been around such a beautiful scenery before and instead had to make do with the sights of London’s slums, she found that it had the same effect.

She began her trek through the rose gardens. She tried to put her worries aside, to enjoy the view, but it wasn’t so easy. Especially not when it felt as if she was seeing Lord Carlefair wherever she went.

“Ah, Lady Jane, what a coincidence that we would meet again.”

Amelia blinked, coming to a halt. The very thought that she would run into Lord Carlefair here when he had been weighing so heavily on her mind threw her for a loop. As he bridged the distance between them, she quickly brought herself back together.

“Is it?” she responded. “I would have thought that it was pretty common for two people who reside in the same home to see each other often.”

Lord Carlefair chuckled. Amelia’s heart thudded painfully when
