“You look as spent as I feel.”

Elise looked up from her pile of photographs. Delilah stood in the doorway, her arms crossed, her eyes red-rimmed.

“This is much more difficult than I thought it would be,” Elise admitted. “I’m not sure how far I got. Maybe this first day was just meant for an emotional cleanse.”

“If that’s the case, I’m pretty cleansed,” her sister stated, stepping into the room.

Delilah carefully tiptoed around the memorabilia spread all over the rug and eased down to sit on her knees. Sara popped into the doorway right then as well and had a tissue up to her nose.

“Is this the pity party?” she asked. “Room for one more?”

“Come on in,” Elise welcomed. “Move things out of the way for a seat if you’d like. I pretty much made a mess in here as I took a long, painful stroll down memory lane.”

Sara circled the bed and ended up climbing on top of it just behind where Elise rested her back.

“This is like when we’d all pile in here when it would storm,” Delilah laughed. “Milly always said she needed a bigger bed if we kept growing, but then we grew out of being scared.”

“You know she loved every time we came in here.” Sara wiped her eyes with a tissue. “She just didn’t want to admit it because she was teaching us independence.”

“There was nobody like her.” Elise shifted her legs and scooped up a stack of photos. “There’s so much love in all of these. It makes me think we should just leave things be and not go searching. We had a great life and I just... I don’t know.”

Sara started toying with Elise’s hair. “I totally get it. I wondered the same thing. If Milly wanted us to know, then she would have told us. But she kept this truth from us for a reason and perhaps she was protecting us.”

Delilah shook her head. “I want to know. I need to know. With all the upheaval in my life right now, I want some control and searching for my biological father is the only thing I can think of outside of work.”

Elise glanced around to the mess she’d made and still had no clear picture of what she wanted to do. Each sister had to make her own choice as to what was right for her and they all likely wouldn’t agree, but Elise knew one thing...they would all support each other no matter what.

“Are we done for the night?” she asked. “I’m exhausted and I’m not sure I can do this anymore today.”

“Let’s head out.” Delilah came to her feet and reached her hand down to Elise. “If you all want to come back tomorrow, let me know. I’m fine taking a break, but I’m also fine doing this again.”

Once on her feet, Elise shrugged. “I’ll feel better once I get some rest. I will be here tomorrow for a few hours at least. Maybe if we do a little each day, we can find some answers or at least feel some sense of closure.
