For the next few days, whenever I’m not in school, I’m on a set filled with people discussing scenes, holding up boom mics, and white balancing cameras—all things I learn about from Salvador as he talks passionately about each aspect. His eyes are bright even when he’s doing things that seem insignificant, like adjusting how someone is holding a reflector so that the shadows under our chins are less harsh. I never realized how many little things had to be just right to take something from amateur quality to professional. He’s in his element and watching him like this is … hot.

Ian never had ambition, and I never realized how much that matters.

This job couldn’t have come at a better time. I don’t have many scenes, so I have the perfect excuse to sneak off to get things for our Tikbalang plan, like flashlights and a backpack. Some of the time, I’m just browsing hunting equipment because I’m not sure what we might actually need, but most of the time, I go over the plan alone because I’m desperate not to mess this up.

I don’t think Salvador even notices I’m missing, especially when he’s working so closely with Mi-Sun and her perfect glass-like skin, but as I walk up on the last evening of my character’s scenes, he says, “Where do you keep disappearing to? You got a secret boyfriend?”

Ha!

“Why is that so funny? You could have one.” He peers around like he’s looking for someone, and I follow his gaze to Mi-Sun … his girl.

Pressing my lips together, I pull out my phone.

After what I’ve been through, I’m a little done with boyfriends for now.
