I walk through the door and head upstairs.

“Is Mom going to be home for dinner?” Jeff asks.

“She said she would be.”

“How late is she working?”

“I have no idea. You should try asking her.”

I walk into my room, slam the door closed and throw myself onto my bed. Today was the second worst day of my life, ranking just behind the day my dad told us he was moving out. Friday seemed bad, but at least it was over in a few minutes. Today, though, seemed like it was never going to end and that doesn’t take into consideration that people are still watching the video of me.

Every time I asked a question or a teacher called on me, someone in the back of the room would laugh. Dozens of my classmates would pretend as though their voices were cracking. Others pretended to cry. A couple of people even asked if I had read a comment they left on the YouTube video. It’s amazing to me how cruel they can be. I managed to not cry while at school, but tears are now freely flowing down my face.

I roll over onto my back once I stop crying. I wipe the last remnants of the salty liquid from my cheeks and take a deep breath.

There’s a knock on my door.

“Not right now, Jeff.”

“It’s me,” my mom says.

“Oh… sorry.”

I get up and open the door. She has a worried look on her face.

“What’s wrong?”

“Everything?”

She steps into my room and closes my door as I walk back to my bed. I sit down. She sits next to me and puts her arm around me.

“What happened, sweetheart?”

“I don’t even know where to start.”

“Was it something with your dad?”

I shake my head. I’m not in the right state of mind to talk to her about him, not right now. Maybe over the weekend.

“No… it was… someone recorded when I sang at the talent show… and they put it on YouTube.”

She puts her other arm around me and hugs me.

“I’m sorry. Did someone mention it at school?”

“Well, Blair sent me the link this morning, when Dad was driving us to school. She said people were passing it around on social media. I opened it up… and it had like eight-hundred thousand views.”

“I’m sorry, sweetie.”

“And that was just this morning… it could be even higher now.”

“I’m not sure what to say. You know I’m not a technologically inclined person… so I don’t know how all of that stuff works.”

“Basically, someone took the video, they uploaded it… and it went viral.”

“Viral?”

“Yeah… it took off and got passed around the internet… people just share it with a few people then those people share it with people. The video gains traction and it blows up.”

I shake my head and take a deep breath.

“I don’t know what else to say… other than I’m sorry.”

“There’s nothing to say. Even worse than everyone watching it… was the thousands of terribly mean comments that people left on the video.”

“That’s not right.”

“Like… I don’t even know what to do.
