CHAPTER FORTY-ONE
1944
Ulf returned from work one evening, too tired to cook, so heâd stopped at a local tavern to pick up food he took home with him. He walked into his house and immediately opened a bottle of beer. He took a long swig, then sat down to eat. He ate slowly and was careful not to get any grease from the sausage on his Gestapo uniform. Sitting down in the living room, he gazed out the window of the home heâd been given by his department head when it was recently Aryanized. Ulf closed his eyes briefly, and his thoughts turned to Anna. Heâd risked so much to rescue her, but in the end, she had not appreciated his efforts. Instead, she ran away from him as soon as he admitted he had been forced to participate in the execution of Jews. She refused to see my point of view. She didnât care how hard things were for me. I had to kill those people. The least she could have done was try to understand. She never takes my side on anything. Typical for a Jew to fail to appreciate all I have done. Instead of saying, âpoor Ulf, it must have been hard for you to do your duty to the fatherland. But you had to do what was expected of you. I know you didnât mean it.â Instead, she got scared and looked at me like I was a monster when I admitted that I had killed people, most of them Jews. But what she didnât understand was that I had to do it. I had orders. I had to follow them. Besides, she should know that I would never hurt her. Iâve always loved her. I suppose it could be argued that I am obsessed with her.
I want her more than I have ever wanted any woman. Maybe itâs because sheâs different. And I suppose I have been warned that Jews have magical powers, and she has cast her Jewish spell on me. This is why the Führer tells us to stay away from them. They taught us that a Jew could cast a spell on an Aryan man and ruin him. I have come to see that. And so, since she will not come to me willingly, I will take her and make her mine no matter what. As an Aryan, it is my right to control her. She is nothing but a Jew, a subhuman at best. So, there is no crime in keeping her for my pleasure.
Ulf was used to having his way. He had been born to a very wealthy father. His mother died when he was just a child. His father soon remarried a woman far younger than himself. She was a beauty who gave him two twin boys. Ulfâs younger half-brothers adored and worshiped him. And in turn, he drank their admiration like a cool drink on a hot day. His father indulged his children, particularly Ulf. Perhaps it was because his father felt guilty that Ulf did not have his birth mother to care for him.
