Chapter Twenty-Eight

CAN I GIVE YOU A CALL?

Raven did a double take at the name on screen. It wasn’t that she didn’t like Fionn, but they weren’t close. They didn’t really interact one on one without the buffer of Davis or Archer. Fionn had only become good friends with them the year before Pádraig had died, and Raven had immediately pulled away from them after his death.

Sure.

Her phone rang immediately.

‘I need your help, but I thought it was better not to put it in writing,’ Fionn’s voice was low and hushed as he spoke.

‘Oh god, are you planning a murder? Hello, by the way.’

‘Sorry, yes, hi. And I promise, no murder. More of a light felony.’

‘Okaaaaay.’

‘I need your help to rob my grandfather.’

Raven’s bark of surprised laughter reverberated down the line.

‘Well, is it actual robbery if you intend to give it back? I need your help to borrow some items from my grandfather without his knowledge or consent.’

‘I don’t know if I should be flattered or concerned that you came to me.’

‘Well, I remember you being very good at finding your way into abandoned buildings a few years ago.’ He paused. ‘Look, I know it’s a lot to ask. But I need to get the information about my relatives, and there’s no way he’ll give it to me.’ His voice quietened. ‘I messed up, keeping this from Archer. I need to make it up to him.’

She glanced over at her bag, where the USB key was still sitting in the pocket, guilt flooding through her. How would Archer react to that? She’d give it to him eventually. She just needed to know what was on it first. Which required her finding the courage to look at it. Which she would.

Soon.

She hoped.

Fionn was still speaking, his voice speeding up in earnest anxiety as he explained. ‘I can’t ask Archer, because I’m doing this for him, and Davis is about as sneaky as a tornado. While I like Éabha a lot, she definitely gives off too much of a wholesome vibe for me to casually ring her up and say “hey, want to rob a pensioner?”, you know?’

‘I don’t know. It’s always the quiet ones that are secretly miscreants,’ Raven mused. She paused, staring at her bag, then sighed. ‘I’ll help you. But you need to come up with a good plan to make sure we don’t get caught, because your granddad would happily have me carted off to jail.’

‘Thank you, Raven,’ Fionn said, the relief clear in his voice. ‘I have it all worked out …’
