I screamed loudly as the headlights in front of me suddenly swerved toward the car I was in.

Before that, I was talking, but it was as if my ears were gummed up after a bad cold. The words were there in the air, but I couldn’t make out what I was saying. The road was quiet, and I could see a set of lights way back in the distance in the side mirror.

Whoever was driving was wearing gloves. Black, woolen gloves on small feminine hands. One hand was on the steering wheel, the other holding a gun which was pointing at me.

She was talking too, angrily, spitting out words I just couldn’t grasp the meaning of, but the noises were urgent, almost vicious. Outside, streetlights glowed yellow through the windshield, the dusty glass blurring the light into a huge mass that covered the entire screen and stopped me from seeing anything much outside other than the dark outlines of trees and the rolling silhouettes of hills set back from the highway.

The car seemed to be moving quickly. Too quickly. Whoever was driving it wasn’t watching the road, although ahead, a set of lights had appeared in the distance, marking out the road ahead.

I listened to the ranting voice next to me, shouting back words that were incoherent to me now, trying to win whatever argument we were having.

Suddenly, she squealed.

The lights of a car swept past, but the inside of the vehicle was dark. It looked like the car was driving itself. All I saw was dark bodywork and orange lights reflecting in the glass.

The harsh sound of a horn drew my attention to the front of the car. The driver screamed as the lights approached.

I screamed as it hit, then everything went to black except the two red dots of the dark car as it pulled up ahead of us.

All I could hear were screams in the darkness. Then fire, crackling brightly, hot flames licking up the front of the car, spreading quickly, too quickly, coming closer and closer until I could feel their heat starting to warm the skin on my face.

“Hannah?”

I groaned. The screaming had stopped, leaving a high-pitched whine in my ears, the echo of the noises I’d made.

“Hannah?” Something shook my shoulder. “Hannah, shit, you’re scaring me now.”

Oh. It’s Rick, I thought through the haze. Rick got me out.

I opened my eyes then sat up quickly when I saw Rick’s face lying next to mine on fluffed-up pillows with bright white cotton covers.

I shook my head.

“You were dreaming, honey.”

“I was?” Confusion was racing through my head,

“Yeah. You screamed really loudly. It nearly deafened me. I nearly peed my pants too.”

I smiled uncertainly. “Nice.”

“What was the dream?”

I gulped, and my mouth felt so dry, as if I’d been screaming for a long time.

“I was in the car.”

“Okay. Who was driving? Don’t push it. Only remember what you can.”

“We were driving. We were arguing. Whoever was driving was angry, so angry. Then there was another car.”

“Bernie’s car.”

“Yes, yes, his car, but there was another.
