Blind Hearts

Blindness

When you’re trapped in the blackened depths of your soul’s inner desire,

Engulfed in the raging flames of yourself, rising higher and higher.

Where the cooling streams of peace are parched dry and left crumbling and bare,

As to think for the needs of others, you never would dare.

Blindness

When you see not the beauty of light and truth,

And instead reject all rational proof,

For the windows of your soul shut out every ray of light,

Out of ignorance, fear and childish fright.

Blindness

When the bitterness of hatred runs through your veins,

Your blood mixed with that of many a man so sorely pained.

When your heart beats to the echo of judgement and sin,

As every good deed counts for simple self-win.

Blindness

When your heart is starved of mercy and wisdom,

For those not officially “of His Kingdom”.

When you’re deaf to the piercing cries beneath the barrier of division,

As the reality of the wider world to you remains hidden.

Blindness

When you see life as halal and haram, good, bad, black and white,

Colour blind to the hues, the tones and realities of life.

For indeed, the reality is that it’s not their eyes that are blind,

But in fact their hearts, souls and very minds. 6

6“Fa’innahaa la ta’ama al-abasaaru wa lakin ta’ama al-qulubu al’lati fii al-sudur” (Qur’an, 22:46)
