He sat in the corner of the room, in the dark, waiting.

“Late night?” Jack asked.

Saint jumped back, dropping his backpack on the floor, as Jack switched a desk lamp on. “Jesus! You scared the shit out of me!”

“Just conserving electricity,” Jack said, with a bit of a snort.

“Sorry about that,” Jill said, coming out of the shadows from the other end of the room. “Your mother let us in, and we had a nice little talk before she had to start on dinner. She seemed happy to have us wait up here—don’t think she really likes Jack.”

Jack motioned with his hands, pantomiming “me?”

Saint collected his backpack from the floor, and hurriedly put items that had come out back in. Then he threw it in his closet. His hair was sweaty, his clothes dirty. “What do you want?”

“You know why we’re here,” Jack said roughly. “We know you met again with James Dylan: the so-called ‘Exterminator.’ What’s going on? What’s the latest?”

“There’s going to be a major rally, marching through some town to show off what a big movement they have.”

“We know about that,” Jack said archly. “These marches have been done before. Just a ragtag bunch of losers, imagining they’re a big deal. They yell and drink, pretend to be tough asses, and that’s about it, according to our sources.”

“Well, maybe,” Saint said. “Hopefully. But I think this could be different. They certainly talk a good game. And they’ve been training to fight… Some will have knives.”

“Thanks for the info, Deep Throat, but I doubt it will get violent. Other than a lot of violent puking.” Jack stood up. “Now we need names. Names beyond the very few you’ve given us. What else have you learned?”

Deja stuck her head around the door, saying dinner would be ready soon.

“I haven’t really learned anything more,” Saint said, shaking his head slowly. He walked back and forth between Jack and Jill for a minute. “Wait, there is someone. A guy we’re meeting. In charge of a weird group: the boogies, or something like that. I think his name is Dirk.”

Jack looked up. “Dirk? Dirk who?”

Deja’s face turned white.

“I don’t know. Just Dirk.”

Jack and Jill exchanged glances. Jack got closer and hovered over Saint. “What else?”

“That’s it! I swear!” Saint said, backing away. “Why are you on me? I didn’t do anything.”

“And it’s going to stay that way,” Jill answered. “It’s too easy to get caught up with the wrong people, get caught up in problems not of your making. Life is too short. Sometimes, you have to learn the hard way. But not this time, Saint.”

Jack just gave him an icy stare. They left the house, telling him to keep his eyes open, both for what more he could glimpse and glean, and for his own safety.

After they left, Jack said to Jill, “Do you think this Dirk and his group are dangerous? Maybe more extreme?”

Jill thought about it. “Could be… but who knows? Sometimes, I think we’re a magnet for malevolence.”

“Fancy word for shitheads,” Jack said.
