In 1609, the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei was one of the first people to look at the night sky through a telescope.

Hunting planets

In 1781, the astronomer Sir William Herschel turned his new telescope to the sky. He noticed a speck of light moving strangely. At first, he thought it was a comet. However, when its orbit was calculated, it turned out to be a planet. It was named Uranus after the ancient Roman god of the sky.

Astronomers found that Uranus was not moving exactly as they thought it should. They wondered if another planet could be tugging Uranus out of position. Mathematicians worked out where the new planet should be. In 1846, astronomers found it. This planet was named Neptune after the Roman god of the sea.
