The IRA was founded in Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 2013. Apparently funded by their countryâs government, the organizationâs purpose is to use an online presence to manipulate media and popular opinion in ways that will benefit Russian interests. One way to do this is by creating online accounts and campaigns pretending to be social activists. They have focused on issues that already divide people and then seek to deepen those divides. For example, in the United States, the IRA ran propaganda campaigns related to gun control, immigration, and racial tensions, even going so far as to set up protests for the Black Lives Matter movement. These were and continue to be legitimate issues within the United States. However, the IRA was able to infiltrate groups such as Black Lives Matter to make existing tensions even worse and to feed a growing distrust of mainstream media. They did this by pretending, for example, to be a Black Lives Matter activist and then posting memes about supposed stories the mainstream media wouldnât report on.
In addition to posing within groups to incite tension, the IRA and other Russian propagandists have learned how to copy Western journalism. Old-style Soviet propaganda was very easy to spot, using language that obviously reflected Communist views. The new version of Russian media is stylistically similar and difficult to tell apart from any American news broadcast. This has made it easier to fool members of the public. It doesnât have the appearance of propaganda, so it has been able to subtly manipulate and sway public opinion.
