Northern Lights

The flickering Northern Lights are still one of the most amazing sights of the natural world.

Ribbons of green light stretch in an arc through the dark night sky. The glow shimmers and then fades. In another part of the heavens, a rose-colored flame intensifies. The color shifts, stretching and widening as you watch. Stars twinkle, visible through the curtains of color. The Northern Lights dance mysteriously in the night. They are high overhead, 60 miles (97 kilometers) above the earth’s surface.1 Suddenly the sky is dark again, leaving you to wonder if you imagined it all.

Unlike the other wonders of the world, the Northern Lights can only be seen at certain times and then only from high northerly latitudes. The lights also go by another name: aurora borealis. In Latin, aurora means the “red light of dawn.” Borealis translates to “northerly.” A mirror image of the Northern Lights is visible near the South Pole. The Southern Lights, or aurora australis, are simply not as famous as their northern cousins. Few people live far enough south to see them.
