By August 1894, the Park Cottage, one of the earliest hotels in West Palm Beach, was open for business. It had been the house of O. S. Porter, who sold his property to Henry Flagler’s agents in 1893 for the town. Originally located in City Park, Park Cottage was moved near the city wharf in 1895. The hotel, run by Mr. O. Howes, was one of the few open year-round.

In 1894, George Zapf built the Seminole Hotel, located on the corner of Banyan and Narcissus Streets. At the time, it was one of the largest structures in West Palm Beach. A fire in January 1896 destroyed the wooden building, but it was rebuilt of brick in just two months. It could accommodate 75 guests and cost $2–$3 a day. The Seminole later became the Lake Park Hotel.
