Chapter Fourteen
âIf you want to hear my story, you'll be listening for a little while,â Laura warned. âThere's a fair bit to it.â
âSpit it out,â Kayla said excitedly.
âLet's hear it,â I agreed.
âAlright, alright,â Laura said. âMost of this happened in the house I grew up in, just down the road. I lived there until I bought this house about ten years ago. If you walk on the road, it'll take four or five minutes to get there, or two minutes if you cut through the woods behind the house here.â
She pointed out the rear window of the bedroom.
âAlmost every day, I would hear something like a ball bouncing coming from the basement. It sounded like a kid dribbling a basketball, or sometimes like a ball being tossed against the wall. That would go on for hours, or until somebody went downstairs to the basement. As soon as you opened the door and started down the stairs, the sounds would stop.â
âEw, creepy,â Kayla said with a shiver.
âThat's just the beginning,â Laura told her. âThe first time I physically saw something, I had been sitting at the computer in my bedroom, when I heard someone's breathing coming from right in front of me. When I looked up, I saw a little girl's face on my wall above the computer screen, staring at me. It scared the hell out of me and I jumped back, toppling out of my chair. The image only stayed there for a couple of seconds, but I got a good look at her. She looked to be between eight and ten years old. She had shoulder length dirty blonde hair, and her eyes were pale blue.â
âThat's all that happened?â I asked her. âShe just stared at you for a couple seconds?â
âThat time, yeah,â Laura confirmed. âThat was the first time I had seen her. The first time my older sister Kennedy saw her, she was in the porch getting ready to leave. Her shoes weren't where she left them, so she looked around the porch and in the coat closet for them. We had a wood furnace for heat, and there was one of those cold air vents in front of the closet. She found her shoes inside the coat closet, and when she knelt down to pick them up, she saw a little girl staring up at her through the vent. She grabbed her shoes and ran out the door screaming.â
âJeeze,â Kayla exclaimed. âI'd have done the same thing. What else happened?â
âThe girl liked to hang around in the basement, my bedroom and the hallway outside my bedroom,â Laura continued. âI think she liked me, maybe as an older sister kind of thing. I was fifteen years old at the time, and she looked to be around ten. She never did anything hostile toward me before, but for some reason, she hated my best friend Abby. I had a few framed photos of the two of us in my room, that would get turned away or turned face down any time I'd leave the room.
