WAITING FOR BERNIE, Frank sat down in front of the computer and stared at Danny Hain’s information page. The man had received a thirty-year sentence in 1990. Now here he was, free after twenty years, walking the streets with God knows what on his mind. Just like that. Yeah, they’d sent him off to a halfway house the first six months, but that was pointless. The guy knew he was going straight home afterwards to mooch from his senile parents, now waiting for them to croak so he could get everything, a twice-convicted pedophile living the good life in a spacious historic home near Palmer Park.

Not fair, Frank thought. Not fair at all. Okay, so they caught him twice and he paid, sort of. But how many other kids did he get to?

Frank closed the web browser and shut his eyes. What a whirlwind the past two weeks had been. He’d heard about the sex offender website years back but never bothered checking it because Hain still had so much time left to serve in Macomb. Then a few months ago at his twenty-year high school reunion, Frank running into his old high school football buddy Bernie Hicks for the first time since 1990, the two of them downing beer after beer at the hotel bar afterwards, Bernie telling him about the first Gulf War and all the shit he’d seen, Frank talking about his divorce and how he was glad no children were involved. Bernie said he was having a hard time, flat broke and in debt with the wrong crowd, doing what he called “certain little jobs” for guys who needed “certain little things” done, whatever that meant. He said he’d done a brief stint as a prison guard up in Macomb, said he was fired for beating a loud-mouthed child molester nearly to death. He said some of those freaks bribed guards to put them in an empty visiting booth for a few minutes to watch the little kids that came in with visiting families, Bernie Hicks telling Frank Guillen guys like that deserved to die.

By that time, Frank was all worked up inside but managed to stay cool when he said, “You worked Macomb? Ever hear of a guy named Danny Hain?”

Bernie Hicks gave him a look. “Hear of him? He’s one of the guys used to bribe the guards. Danny Hain’s one of the sickest dudes I ever laid eyes on.” He lit a cigarette. “Man, how you know that name?”

Looking back, Frank was pretty sure it was the alcohol that made him tell the truth when he said, “Danny Hain coached my Little League team when I was growing up in New Haven. I was twelve the last time I saw him. What’s he got, another ten left?”

Bernie drained what was left of his beer and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “Frank, Danny Hain’s been out four months at least. Probably close to leaving whatever halfway house he’s in, too.” He motioned to the bartender for another round.
