Chapter 18

THE SMELL of coffee wakes me up. I’m in Levi’s bed under his covers, wearing one of his shirts and my underwear.

“Hello,” Levi says. He’s sitting next to me and being incredibly loud. “Did you sleep okay?”

I’m about to answer him, but my tongue is sticking to the roof of my mouth and it’s going to be a huge amount of effort to peel it off. I try to nod instead, but it feels like my brain is bouncing against the side of my skull, so I remain unmoving and look at him through squinted eyes.

“Painkillers,” he says. He rattles the bottle in front of me, which I am fairly sure is a sign of aggression. I take them from him and try to unscrew the cap, but I’m fumbling, so he opens it for me.

“Do you remember what happened last night? You were hammered,” he says.

I swallow and look down. Everything comes back to me in flashes, taking five shots of tequila in quick succession at the bowling alley. Then walking to the Quayside as I decided to drag myself up Levi’s stairs and into his flat. Before I spilled water over myself and told him about the cheating.

“Levi,” I say, grabbing his hand. “Shit, I came to tell you straight away.”

He nods, raising one eyebrow, looking horribly, disgustingly skeptical. “I know you think you cheated on me,” he says. “I know. You told me. Do you remember what happened after that?”

I swallow. My throat hurts. I close my eyes and think of him sitting on the sofa, next to me, his eyes sparkling. “You said that you loved me.”

“Yeah,” he replies. “I did.”

I close my eyes and throw my arms around him. I hold him close to me and smell him, his clothes, his skin, the product on his hair.

“I love you,” I say. “I love you so much. I’m so sorry.”

My tears are already on his chest and I hate myself for being such a baby. I’m a mess and I need him to forgive me. I mean, really, I don’t know what I would do if he wasn’t in my life anymore. It feels like I can clearly see the way my life has been divided—before Levi, after Levi. I don’t want to find out what a post-Levi life is going to be like.

He puts his hand on the back of my head and shushes me. “Hey, it’s okay,” he says. “You’re hating on yourself for nothing. Really. I told you last night, we’re going to sort this out.”

I nod, swallowing. I don’t know what we’re supposed to be sorting out, but I think that means he forgives me. At least it makes the tears stop.

“Hey,” he says. “You should call Ziggy and get her to bring some of your clothes. Spend the next week with me. I’ll look after you.”

“Wait—”

“I mean it,” he says. “Look, you obviously shouldn’t be alone right now, and I kind of desperately miss you.”

I sigh. I guess I don’t have anything to do now, and I would like to be around him.
