Chapter 6

Alasdair leaned his back against the archway of the music room, crossing his right leg over his left as he studied Dianna, so immersed in thought as she gazed out of the window overlooking the lake, she did not sense his presence. She made a striking picture in a day dress of cream cotton imprinted with honeysuckle and wild roses, her fair hair braided and wrapped into a neat bun at the top of her head. Soft laughter drifted from her lips.

He had never heard this titter before—so deep within—and Alasdair thought he’d heard them all. He had been collecting them over the years. Each and every one of her hundred smiles, every cracked grin, every note of laughter. Every lift of her brow, every wrinkle of her nose, even every roll of her eye.

And now, the lift of her knee.

His twin parts still stung at the memory of last night, and he flexed his fingers, resisting the instinct to cover his groin. The lass possessed a feisty spirit. He could not deny she awoke something primitive inside him, a slumbering passion that since roused, stole his every waking thought. But Dianna had been right. He did not know her. He had never taken the time to peel away the layers that wrapped her in mystery.

“What is so amusing?” Alasdair asked, wanting her eyes on him.

She turned to look at him, and Alasdair blinked. A vision against the backdrop of clear, unhindered sky, she stole his breath. He could no longer avoid her, or her gaze. Not after what happened in the ruins. Earlier years, months, weeks, days even, he’d have avoided those emeralds at any cost. A rude trait, but Alasdair could never quite fully stare into her eyes. What man wished to feel as though two hundred stones had been hurled against his fortress and hit glass, shattering precious self-restraint? What man wouldn’t avoid a woman who wore the universe draped over her shoulder like a fox fur cloak?

Christ, he did. He wanted to avoid that feeling almost above anything else.

“Peregrine and Elspeth are out on the lake,” she murmured, and chuckled. “They seem to have lost their oars.”

“I caught them sneaking into the garden last evening.”

“Were you lurking in the shadows again?”

“I had hoped to find you,” Alasdair admitted. “Instead I found…” He cleared his throat. The memory of them, lip-locked, still burned his skull.

“Ah.”

He arched a brow. “You knew?”

“I suspected.” She peered at him uncertainly before murmuring, “You said you might never be ready to marry me, and then you kissed me.”

“You said you’d marry Peregrine if you weren’t engaged to me, and then you kissed me back.”

The one corner of her mouth curved. “Touché.”

“Did you mean what you said to Peregrine?”

“Of course not, we are merely good friends.”

Alasdair scowled. “Then why the devil would you tell him that then?”

“Alasdair, Peregrine is colorblind.”

“Colorblind?” Alasdair stilled. “What exactly does that mean?”

“It means he cannot discern color,” she paused, and shook her head. “Och well, he can identify certain hues, like green, but they are subdued.
