Chapter Thirty-Six

When Abram saw Kara covered in blood and the panic on his son’s face, he forgot that he was a prisoner. He forgot that a guard held a gun to his head. All he could see was the woman he loved, bleeding. And he ran to her.

The guard was so shocked he didn’t shoot.

“Kara . . .” Abram said softly.

She could hardly stand up, and she was holding on to the side of the automobile. Then she looked up and into his eyes. “Abram? Abram?” she said. “Is it really you?” Her hands were trembling as she reached for him. “Am I dead?” she asked in a small voice.

He shook his head. “No, you’re not dead. And yes, Kara, it’s me.”

“Prisoner, get away from her. Come over here and get back to work or I’ll shoot,” the guard said. He was nervous. Not only was the prisoner acting strangely, but he couldn’t help but remember and fear the words of the oberstrumführer: “My wife must never see the prisoners.” He pulled his gun on Abram. But he was afraid to fire in front of the oberstrumführer’s wife.

Kara looked at the guard, stunned. “Who are you? What are you doing here? Put that gun down immediately.”

“Your husband said . . .”

“My husband. What has all of this got to do with my husband?”

Now the guard was at a loss for words. She was never to know anything about the oberstrumführer’s job. He made that clear. But what should I tell her now? I am standing in her front yard. A prisoner, filthy and wearing a uniform is speaking to her. I am in such terrible trouble, the guard thought. I dare not kill this man here in front of her. The oberstrumführer would not like this at all. Not at all. But I don’t know what to do.

The guard didn’t answer Kara’s question. He just shook his head.

“I am confused.” Kara was holding her head. “But I plan to speak to this man,” she said, indicating Abram. And then to the guard, she said, “And as for you, I want you out of here. Get off my property.”

Kara turned her attention back to Abram. “Abram, you are alive,” she said incredulously.

“Yes.”

“It’s a miracle. I feel like I am dreaming. How did you find me?”

“Kara . . . I am a prisoner. Your husband is the oberstrumführer at the mine where I work. Several weeks ago, I was brought here to your home, to build you a garden. At the time I didn’t know it was for you. But then I saw you . . . and Karl. Oh, Kara . . . today I was brought back here again to maintain your garden. And I wasn’t going to speak to you because I knew you were safe, but then when I saw the blood on your dress, I couldn’t help myself,” he said. His voice was choked up. Then he touched her hand with his own trembling one. Tears flooded his face.
