THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS, OCTOBER 14, 1066 CE

The Battle of Hastings marked a major milestone in English history. It was the first of and one of the most decisive battles of the invasion of the Normans in the eleventh century. One of the most important records of the events leading up to the eventual Norman conquest of England is found in the artifact known as the Bayeux Tapestry. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a first-hand historical record of the era, also provides details about the conflict.

Hastings remains interesting to historians because the Saxons in England and the Normans from France utilized different weapons and military tactics. The Normans’ triumph meant irrevocable changes in the governance of England. It would also closely link the fates and histories of France and England for the next few centuries. A number of military conflicts would arise as a result.

This painting shows the Battle of Hastings, which took place October 14, 1066, and marked a decisive Norman victory in their conquest of England.
