The dining room looked exactly the same as it had three years ago. Megan had been so happy to walk through it on her last night after all the customers had finished and gone home.

Nothing ever changed at the Starfire Lake Country Club, except the staff in the kitchen. There were servers and hostesses that had been there for years, but the only kitchen staff that had been there longer than two years were Chef Roger and his sous chef, Michael.

But not Megan. No, eight months working under Chef Roger and his ‘constructive criticism’ that was more akin to an evisceration than anything remotely helpful and she’d almost given up on her career.

She smiled at the hostess, Stephanie, and waved as she turned to go down the hall to the Andromeda Room. Caleb trailed behind. The Andromeda Room was the only private party room in the club and cost a fortune.

But since Rose’s parents wanted to have the rehearsal dinner at the farmhouse, Henry had convinced his parents to do something else. They insisted on a sit-down dinner at the Club, of course. Thankfully it was the bridal party and parents of the bride and groom, nobody else. As it was, they were a party of fifteen.

Megan said a prayer of gratitude for the dated carpet as she dashed past the door to the kitchen. She could hear the clang of metal, sizzling, and Roger barking orders. She didn’t slow down until she got to the party room. Caleb was only steps behind her.

They weren’t the only ones late. Rose’s parents hadn’t arrived either. Megan and Caleb said hello to everyone, including a hug and peck on the cheek from Henry’s parents, Henry Sr., and Patricia.

After a few seconds of small talk, Megan let Caleb lead her to two seats across from each other. Megan sat between Rebecca and Theresa and was grateful for it. Caleb was between Tyler and Matthew, with Tucker between Tyler and Henry. Ainsley was on Theresa’s other side, and Rose on Rebecca’s, across from Henry.

Not long after Megan and Caleb sat, Rose’s parents – Megan’s Aunt Violet and Uncle Thomas – arrived. The servers came around for drink orders and Megan got pulled into another conversation with Theresa.

Still, a large fraction of Megan’s attention stayed on Caleb. He talked and laughed with both Tyler and Matthew. She caught a few words – something to do with sports.

Megan tried to ignore the knots in her stomach as she also kept an eye on the door for her old boss. Theresa kept up most of the conversation, and Megan only needed to chime in here and there with a question.

As it turned out, Theresa was a high school history teacher, and worked as the school’s junior varsity soccer coach. She raved about Matthew, who taught math at the middle school and coached baseball.

Not long after the entrée was served, Roger made his appearance. Megan’s stomach dropped as he swaggered through the door to the Andromeda Room, a smile on his face.
