Fifty-two days later, Jerusalem’s wall was rebuilt. What had lain in an embarrassing heap of rubble for years was rebuilt in fifty-two days! For those of us who love the hope of positive change happening fast, there’s nothing more delightful than this picture.

When the seventh month came and everyone was settled in their towns, over forty-two thousand people assembled in front of the Water Gate to hear the scribe Ezra read from the Book of the Law of Moses. As he opened the book, the multitude stood to their feet, but before he could even begin reading, they began to shout, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting their hands. The next thing they knew they were bowed low, worshiping the Lord with their faces to the ground. Tears streaming down dirt-stained faces, these Jews were welcoming their watershed moment. As their chests heaved, sobbing from the significance of this moment, they had to fall to the ground.

Seeing God move on your behalf has a way of doing this. When you feel the magnitude of God’s goodness, standing is no longer an option. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve ended up with my face on my kitchen floor, my bathroom tile, or the steering wheel of my car. These are moments when our faces can’t handle the weight of his glory.

Nehemiah and Ezra encouraged the people to stop weeping, to get up and eat and drink, for this was a day holy to the Lord. Nehemiah shouted to the people, “Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).

After the hard work of rebuilding walls, it’s time to celebrate, and no one enjoys celebrating more than God. Imagine the joy in churches if people gathered for the sole purpose of celebrating the moments of God’s victory in our communities of faith. Food, laughter, music, praise — engaging one another and enjoying our God. If we labor with him to rebuild what is broken, the joy of the Lord will be our strength. It’s a strength that can’t be contained or measured, for it floods our lives with the torrents of his grace.
