From the shadow of a large tree, Barnes watched the activity through the NVGs.

The dirt road had taken him into the woods, common in the part of the country. He drove cautiously, not wanting to run into them, or anything else, for that matter. As soon as he spotted the lights ahead of him, he pulled the Octavia off the road into a small clearing adjacent to it and got out, taking the rifle with him. As a boy he had hunted plenty of times at night, so he was comfortable gliding through the trees to reach the edge of the grove.

He started with the people gathered around the farm truck, observing them through the rifle's scope. One was dressed as a farmer, probably Jirina's husband or brother-in-law. The other five wore dark clothing and were armed, but none were Tanner Wilson. But the two women -- one African-American, the other reminding Barnes of a college instructor he had -- fit the description of the two female operators in Wilson's team.

He shifted his rifle toward the house, but the glare of the lights in front of it made it difficult to see anything. He saw a couple of people running toward a barn behind the house, disappearing inside. Looking back to the house, he saw four people enter. They were inside before Barnes could determine which, if any, had been his quarry. But no matter. If OUTCAST was here, then so was Wilson. He was either in the house or still inside the truck.

He briefly thought about contacting Tichacek right then, but after seeing no bars on his phone, rejected the thought. He would have to leave the area to call the colonel, and he didn't much like the idea of letting Wilson out of sight now that he was finally so close.

If it became clear Wilson was hunkering down for an extended period, Barnes would leave and make an anonymous phone call to the police about seeing the "American Terrorists," then call Tichacek with another report to confirm the first one and let the police handle it. But should Wilson and his team move out soon. . . .Barnes cracked a smile from his place of concealment.

Well, that's what the CZ 700 was for, wasn’t it?
