Chapter 3
The following afternoon, under the shade of the Chuâs willow tree beside the fishing pond, Travis enjoyed a late lunch with Jack and Min. Cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches and fresh blackberries with lemonade to wash it all down. Their three childrenâfour-year-old son, Jong-Su, and twin two-year-old daughters, Hana and Maryâwere currently running through a field of wildflowers, chasing butterflies with Niko.
Next to Travis, Jack whittled a square block of wood into a new shape. Looked like an animal. A cat, maybe. The muscles on his thick arms flexed every time he slid the carving knife across the wood and little flecks of it keep getting caught in the few daysâ worth of dark scruff on his face.
âSo, whereâve Decker and Scarlet been, then?â he asked as he worked. âHavenât seen them around much.â Jack added a teasing grin when he looked up at Travis. âHave they gone on vacation without you?â
Decker and Scarlet were two of Travisâs oldest friends. Theyâd all met in primary school when they were chosen to work in a group together and got along famously right from the start. When Niko came along, they simply made room for him, their hearts unfurling and adding another to their group.
âMm-mm.â Travis took a bite of his sandwich. âTheyâre off on a job for some bridge-builder whoâs having trouble with sirens in the area.â
A sea witch and a faery were two very handy magick-users to have around in the event of a water problem. Born right at the edge of the ocean like generations before him, Decker practically grew up in the water and had a strong connection to the sea and everything in it. As a faery, Scarlet would have better luck conversing with the sea fae more than anyone else.
âAnd they didnât invite you along?â
Travis chuckled. âGuild sanctioned job, Iâm afraid.â
The pair of them was members of the Spiritâs Eye Guild and had been since graduating from traditional schooling.
âAh.â Min laughed in the back of her throat. âAnd when are you gonna give in and join a respectable Guild, huh? Isnât that where the real money is?â
Jet black hair tied in a loose braid, she leaned back on her hands, the warm spring sun soaking into her golden skin. Sheâd been trying her hand at needlepoint but had since tossed it to the side, deciding it wasnât right for her. She hadnât been too good at it so the canvas wasnât all that offended to be discarded. Min flicked her neatly-shaped eyebrows at him, almost as though accusing him of something when, really, she simply enjoyed teasing him just as much as her husband.
âWhat do you mean?â Travis held his arms to the sides. âAnd give up all this freedom?â
The three of them shared a laugh as they looked out at the field where three kids and one familiar hopped through the flowers.
âHeâs very good with the children,â Min said, still watching her children play with Niko, âisnât he?â
Travis laughed when a blue butterfly landed on Nikoâs nose and he swatted at himself in an attempt to get it.
