Chapter fourteen

The next couple of weeks for me, for us, were uneventful. We were far more diligent with my schedule, where we went and how we handled that.

One thing I found interesting, curious and painful; no one from my family, not Pater, Mater or Qualen stopped by or even contacted me to see if I was all right. No one. Clearly, I was a non-person now. And all because of my stupid vid. Well, because of my stupid immaturity and the need for selfish attention. The vid was simply the expression of that. Tor and Ashwan had been trying to say that for a while. Now I get it.

And now I fully understand. . . fully, what they mean when they said House Brite would attempt retribution, as clumsy as that was.

I had met with Tor in his med-suite with Ashwan and my guard. He had heard of the attack within minutes of it happening.

He was also surprised. Not by Brite attacking, but the fumbled attempt at it.

When we met, he nodded as we walked in and I could instantly see he was surveying my condition to make sure I was okay. I warmed at that.

He looked at Ashwan and the guard, “I’ve given more thought to the attempt, yesterday. Do you all wish to sit? We have much to discuss.”

I’d been sitting all morning. I have found myself waking earlier and earlier each day, since my days have purpose now with my training regime, so I’d been up a while.

We all preferred to stand, so he continued, “This was a solo act. He may have been Brite, but he was not representing House Brite. He was a loner, likely seeking status within the House or even a friend of Enwal seeking to honor him.”

He paused for a moment as he processed more, “Are you aware that Enwal is off-planet now?”

I wasn’t. The guard wasn’t, but Ashwan nodded.

Hmm, another lesson for me. Why hadn’t I thought of that. I’m sooo dumb. I’d embarrassed Enwal and had not even thought to keep track of what he was doing. I felt like I needed to go back to 1-Grade to start my education all over again.

I didn’t know where to begin, but asked, “I didn’t even think of that. Where is he and is he organizing this?”

Tor and Ashwan both shook their heads. Tor spoke first, “No, I don’t think he was even aware. He is on Haden at the academy and is already fully into his training. He likely doesn’t even yet have contact privileges with his family or friends. No, I don’t think he orchestrated this. I’m guessing it was a friend, trying to cover Enwal’s honor. If this had been a House Brite attack, you’d be dead.”

I was surprised, a bit hurt and, I guess, stunned at the directness and simplicity of his statement.

But he was being honest and direct, assessing the situation and discussing the risk assessment openly.

I nodded slowly, still getting my mind around all of this,
