He was receiving plenty of stares and wished he’d thought to change out of his formal whites but Ben had been distracted when the Newman family dropped him off. Scoring a lift instead of taking the train had been a bonus, resulting in him arriving in Sydney over an hour earlier than anticipated, but he still hadn’t claimed that longed-for moment of holding Poppy in his arms at last. Her dorm had turned out to be disappointingly empty and now he was simply wandering up and down George Street, in the faint hope she was here somewhere; possibly in one of the pubs that were filled to overflowing this warm summer night.

‘Hey handsome,’ said one girl, giggling as she passed with her friends, and he tipped his hat self-consciously, regretting his lack of forethought once more. Still, he was here now, and somewhere nearby was the woman he loved – that one who promised to wait. Well no more bloody waiting tonight, he promised her silently, marching through the doors of yet another hotel. Not for even one single, stolen hour.
