Chapter 10

There was no time to escape. One truck was coming south down Minaret Road, the other two from the east and west on Main Street. Thinking fast, Brody scanned the area and honed in on the dumpsters full of the dead.

“Shit!” Cyrus said, pulling out a magazine, slapping in a new one and chambering a round. “These motherfuckers want a war, I’m going to give it to them.”

Brody grabbed him by the wrist. “No. Follow me.”

“What?”

Brody got up and started double-timing it over to the large industrial dumpsters. “Come on.”

Cyrus’s hesitation didn’t last long. He shouted to the others and they sprinted across the parking lot. “Get in!” Brody shouted, making a waving motion with his hand. One by one they climbed in and hid themselves beneath the mountain of bodies. Brody was the last one in, he dropped into the bloodbath full of limbs, smeared his face with sticky blood, and piled a body on top of him. Inside it smelled rancid, a mixture of iron, grime and human waste.

From beyond the steel container, he could hear trucks getting closer, and then Koreans yelling as boots pounded the pavement. Multiple shots were fired. All the pain he was feeling in his thigh had been replaced by a rush of adrenaline. To his left he could see Cyrus staring at him, not moving a muscle. He didn’t trust him. That hadn’t changed. But in that moment, he pushed his differences aside to focus on making sure that neither of them died.

He couldn’t understand a word the Koreans were saying but it was clear they were fuming. It must have burned them to know that their entire unit had been wiped out before they could return to help.

The sound of boots got closer to the dumpsters. Brody closed his eyes and held his breath, praying in his mind for them to walk away. One of them must have peered inside as he heard his body slap up against the metal siding.

More yelling ensued, though this time Brody heard an American’s voice, a familiar sound — it was Gus. His eyes widened in horror. Then came the sound of a match being lit, and the aroma of a cigarette. He went to move but Cyrus reached over and placed his hand over his mouth and shook his head.

“You sons of bitches, you can go to hell for all I care,” Gus cried.

They could hear Gus being beaten. His groans, and the sound of someone assaulting him ferociously made Brody sick to his stomach. How didn’t he spot him? He just assumed everyone was nearby. What about Todd? He didn’t even think about him. The Korean soldier that was nearby walked away. The sound of his boots crunching gravel grew faint. Brody desperately wanted to sit up and look over the edge but Cyrus was holding him in place.

They were torturing Gus. No doubt trying to get information out of him as to who had killed their comrades but he wasn’t saying a word.
