Chapter Eleven

Imogen

I can’t seem to stop smiling.

It’s been that way since I left Walker’s place first thing this morning, but I guess that’s not surprising. Being with him has been a revelation… and not just a sexual one.

My conversation with Stella was necessarily brief, because she had to go to work. In a way, I hoped that would be the case. I didn’t want to go into too much detail with her, but like I said to Walker, I felt I owed her an explanation.

“Can I take it something happened this time?” she asked, standing in the kitchen, a glass of orange juice in her hand.

“Maybe.”

She struggled not to smile, and eventually gave up, a grin forming on her face. “And? What was he like?”

“I couldn’t possibly say.”

“That means he was good. You’d tell me if he wasn’t.”

She wasn’t wrong there. “The thing is, I’ve agreed to spend the rest of my stay with him. I hope you and Dylan don’t mind, but I’m gonna pack up my things and drive back there at lunchtime.”

She chuckled. “I don’t know why you’re sounding so apologetic. After everything Jeremy did to you, I think it’s great you’re letting your hair down.” My skin prickled, and I struggled against the cold shudder that jolted through me. “That is what you’re doing, isn’t it? You’re not getting involved with someone else already?”

“Of course I’m not.” Much.

She sighed. “That’s good. Because I think you need some time to reassess, don’t you?”

I wasn’t so sure, but I nodded my head anyway. It seemed like the wisest move. And in any case, I wasn’t in the mood for a lecture about my choices.

“I know you need to get to work,” I said. “And I’ve gotta take a shower and pack my things, but I’ll leave your key on the kitchen countertop when I go… okay?”

“Sure. And call me when you get back to Ashport, won’t you? It’s bound to be hard for you, being there… with him. And I’m here if you need to talk.”

I nodded my head and gave her a hug before I left the room, making my way to my bedroom.

I’m sure it will be tough to go back to Ashport, but not for the reasons Stella seemed to think. The more I contemplate going, the more I’m dreading it. Now, though, the problem isn’t just that I might have to face Jeremy and his pregnant girlfriend. It’s that I’m going to miss Walker… more than I want to think about.

Which is why I’m not going to think about it.

Long-distance relationships are fraught with difficulties. And who said anything about a relationship, anyway? Walker certainly hasn’t mentioned one. For all I know, these few days could be all he wants.

Are they all I want, though?

I didn’t come into this thinking about anything other than sex, and making myself feel better after what Jeremy had done.

Walker has definitely achieved that. I’ve never felt this good in my life.

I guess that means my fear of leaving must be because Walker is so great in bed.
