Reno finally headed back to the field office. He’d lost track of Danielle completely and was just wasting his time driving down miles of open road. He didn’t feel good about chasing her anymore, anyway. Now that she felt vulnerable to him, she’d only run harder. The idea put him in a bad mood, and it only got worse when he walked in the door and saw George at his desk. FBI agents didn’t have partners, but they did bounce ideas off one another. George knew full well how this case had tied Reno up in knots.

Today, Reno didn’t feel much like talking.

George didn’t much care.

“So a strip club this time, huh?” he asked. He spun around in his chair and leaned back, ready for all the details. “Did you get to see her dance?”

“Some,” Reno said.

George’s eyebrows rose, making his cherubic face look even rounder. “That good?”

“She was all right.”

George laughed. “Looks like she knocked your socks off. How did you say she escaped again?”

“The bouncer got in the way.” Reno turned toward the coffee pot and poured himself a cup. “She ran out while the guy whaled on my ribs and gave me this black eye.”

“I heard that you did worse to him.”

Reno threw a glare over his shoulder. “He was aiding and abetting a fugitive.”

George chuckled at the flimsy excuse and rubbed his hands over his belly. The guy passed all the Bureau’s physical fitness tests without breaking a sweat, but it was his doughboy appearance that usually nabbed people. They underestimated him. “And the fact that he cut her dance short had nothing to do with it?”

“You think this is funny?” Reno asked. Coffee spilled out of his cup as he turned. He could think of a lot of words to describe the hell this case had put him through, but “funny” wasn’t one of them.

“No, I think it’s humbling.” George turned serious. “The Bureau has put significant resources into catching this woman, but she’s managed to thwart our efforts using only ingenuity and sheer guts. You’ve got to admit she’s one of the slipperiest suspects we’ve ever come up against.”

“What did you expect? She’s got an IQ like Einstein.”

“True.”

Reno sipped some of the strong brew. “Along with the stubbornness of a mule.”

“Mm hm.”

“And the tenacity of a Komodo dragon.”

“I’d say.” George tipped his head to the side. “Looks like she’s got something else, too.”

Reno looked over the rim of the insulated cup. “What’s that?”

“You. By the balls.”

“Watch it.”

George rocked forward and braced his elbows against his knees. His voice dropped low, but it carried a sense of urgency. “I have watched, Jeff, and until now I’ve kept quiet. But no more. You’ve been chasing her until you can’t see straight, and now she’s using it to her advantage.”

Reno’s chin jerked up.

“Hey, don’t give me that. My sixteen-year-old looked at me the same way when I took away the keys to the car.” George cocked his head. “He had the hots for a cute blonde, too, if I remember correctly.
